Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be injured to come to dance physical therapy?

Physical therapy can help you achieve any dance goal. If you have a physical limitation or medical condition that is limiting you in the studio (for example: hypermobility, POTS, low back pain, pinchy hip, a stuck arabesque, or ankle weakness), insurance is likely to cover your care. Performance training and pointe readiness assessments are available at the clinic’s cash-pay rate.

Do I have to be a dancer to see you?

Not at all! While I specialize in dance PT, I also treat people of all ages and conditions, including people with pelvic floor conditions. I may be an especially good fit for you if you are a gymnast, aerialist, figure skater, or performing arts athlete. I also have experience and interest in treating hypermobility, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and dysautonomia.

Why see a dance PT instead of a regular PT?

As a dancer, I understand what your body needs to do to get back to performing. As a dance teacher, I am skilled at incorporating strength gains we make in PT to your technique, so you’ll directly benefit in your dancing.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, ideally clothing that exposes the body part we will be working on (ex. if you have knee pain, wear shorts). You can also bring your pointe shoes and/or dance shoes.

What should I expect?

We will start with a thorough evaluation that reviews your medical and surgical history, general markers of health, strength and range of motion testing, and functional tests. We will also do hands-on work to assess how the body part is moving. From there, we will make a treatment plan that includes hands-on work, retraining movement patterns, and exercises. You will receive “homework” including exercises that you will do regularly between appointments. We will continue to reassess your progress and modify the treatment plan as you go through your plan of care.
